Degradation Engine works very much like a conventional subtractive synthesizer, you have a filter, an ADSR, a mixer and some useful effects. A distinctive feature is two oscillators, each of which has two regulators that control «losses». These regulators switch the oscillator signal from raw to degraded, sampled from microcassette film – so for each oscillator you can choose any point between the raw analog waveform and the complete brittleness of the film.
In addition, each oscillator has two types of degradation, with samples recorded at both full and half speeds. At full speed the sound is more fragile, at half speed it is warmer and more rounded – and again, you can choose any point between these two extremes. And if you consider that there are two wave forms for each oscillator, the sound quickly becomes very deep…
