Brass and percussion of Ancient Rome. Maleventum Pompeii is a Kontakt library based on the brass instruments and percussion of Ancient Rome.
We collaborated with producer and ancient instrument expert Francesco Landucci to record a vast array of horns and drums in the original environment of a Roman reservoir at the archaeological site of Cecina in Italy.
Most instruments were recorded with both close and room mics to allow flexibility when mixing/switching from a more intimate, throaty sound to a more expressive one.
The following original instruments are featured in Maleventum Pompeii:
• Horns: Roman Cornu, Lituus, Roman Tuba, Aulos, goat horns of various sizes and typologies.
• Flutes, whistles and pan flutes (syrinx)
• Drums and percussion: Timpani, Tintinnabula, Crotala, Sistrum
• Weapons: swords, spears, metals, helmets.
With 15 carefully crafted Kontakt instruments, Maleventum Pompeii offers a wide range of compositional possibilities, from playable solo horn instruments to evocative horns layers, from war horns sound design instruments to phrases, drum loops and one-shots.
Following the concept and tradition of the famous Maleventum 1 and Maleventum 2, the instruments in Maleventum Pompeii instantly evoke scenes of ancient battlefields, solemn pagan rituals, and the sound palette ranges from the cool colors of the north to the warm lands of the Mediterranean.
Maleventum Pompeii is intended for composers of television, film, games and sound designers who are looking for a one-of-a-kind instrument based on rare and carefully recorded horns and percussion instruments to immediately create a mood of ‘dark ages’ and ‘ancient times’. It is particularly well suited to the epic genre, especially fantasy and dark age films, but its versatility makes it useful also for post-horror, thriller, electronic music and ambient.
